Fluorescent Lighting System Introduction Fluorescent lighting is a popular and efficient lighting system used worldwide. Fluorescent lighting is most commonly found in commercial facilities, partly because traditional fluorescent lighting systems are more complex and physically larger than the simple incandescent lamp and socket, and historically, fluorescent lighting tended to only be available in "colder" colors of light than the accepted "warm" color produced by incandescent lighting. The non-warm colors produced by most fluorescent lighting systems seemed inappropriate for some applications.
However, recent technological improvements have produced "warmer" lamp colors, smaller fluorescent lighting systems, and with growing concern over energy costs, there has been a renewed interest in using fluorescent lighting in residential locations. The initial cost of Fluorescent lighting systems is another barrier to wider use, although this is short-sighted thinking. Fluorescent lamps and fixtures are definitely more expensive to install than incandescent lighting, but they are considerably cheaper to operate and the lamps last far longer than incandescent lamps, making the long term cost-of-operation for fluorescent lighting far less than incandescent lighting. Components of the Fluorescent Lighting System A Fluorescent lighting system consists of two or three main components: (1) The fluorescent lamp, (2) The Ballast, and (3) the Starter system. Depending on the particular fluorescent lighting system, the starter may be a replaceable component, a starter may not be required, or the starter function may be integrated into the ballast. The starting function may also rely on the physical design of the fixture. Fluorescent Lighting Systems contain two or three physical components depending on the fixture class. There three classes of fluorescent lighting systems are: (1) Pre-Heat, (2) Rapid-Start, and (3) Instant-Start. Depending on the type, a fluorescent lamp may use a heated cathode (typically a tungsten filament) to get the current flow initially started, or may be an all-cold cathode design, relying on ionization or brute-force voltages (or both) to get the lamp started. The Fluorescent Lamp: Similar to the gas-discharge lighting systems known collectively as neon lighting, a fluorescent lamp mainly contains argon gas. When a flow of electrical current passes through argon gas, several wavelengths of light are produced, including short-wave ultraviolet light. However, using argon gas alone doesn't produce sufficient short-wave ultraviolet to greatly excite the phosphors used in most fluorescent tubes. To generate more ultraviolet, a small amount of mercury is added to each lamp. Fluorescent Lighting Efficiency: Fluorescent lighting produces far more light with longer life than incandescent lamps for the same amount of power consumed. The problem, or problems that have caused resistance to using fluorescent lighting are about as resolved as they will ever be. The size of fluorescent fixture and lamps have been reduced considerably, allowing direct substitution for incandescent lamps in many cases. The color of the light produced has been improved with fluorescent lamps available that produce warmer light, comparable with that produced by incandescent lamps. The problem that remains, is initial cost. The typical purchaser has a hard time looking at the cost savings in electricity and lamp life, and see only the initial purchase cost. Still, when you just consider either of these items, the fluorescent lamp is the big winner. Compact Fluorescent Lighting: These energy saving light bulbs are designed for use n 12 VDC solar systems. They use compact .fluorescent tubes with an integrated electronic ballast. Pre-heating ensures smooth start and flicker free operation. They fit into standard lamp-holders, table or wall lights etc. (BC standard bayonet & ES large screw caps). 550 lumen output of 11W lamp is equivalent to a 60W 230Vac incandescent bulb. 7W lamp gives 320 lumens (similar to a 40W bulb) and 5W gives 210 lumens. 6000 hr rated life. Warm white (2700K) or cool white (6400K) versions. 2-D Fluorescent Lighting: Using the Thorn 2D folded tube, 12W units give comparable light output to a 75W filament bulb. White, square diffuser, surface mounting fitting, includeon/off rocker switch. Includes on/off switch. Lumina Fluorescent Lighting: These use compact fluorescent folded tubes in a tough white ABS housing. 7 W units give comparable light output to a 40 W filament bulb (11W to 75 W & 18 W to 100 W). Reverse polarity protected. SLH18 is housed in a weatherproof bulkhead type fixture (IP65). Batten Fluorescent Lighting: Built to World Bank standards these fluorescent lights are designed for high light output, performance and reliability. Includes reflector. Integral rocker switch. |
