Why and what should I do if projector lamps and bulbs are getting dimmer?

With metal halide (high pressure mercury) projector lamps, the image will lose clarity, contrast, and sharpness. How long will projector lamps and bulbs last?
Because this kind of projector accessories are just advanced versions of light bulbs, they also have a manufacturer specified operating time given in hours of use. Most conventional ones last for roughly 1000 to 2000 hours while newer models boast upwards of 4000+ hours. However, the quality of the lamp is actually more important than operating time as super-long lasting bulbs are probably not worth the price markup. How can I make projector lamps and bulbs last longer?
The number one problem that leads to burnouts is overheating. Make sure you purchase a quality projector with an adequate fan/cooling system. The optimal condition for a projector lamp is a maximum of a few hours usage per day in a relatively clean, dust-free, and moderate temperature environment.

What is the difference between metal halide and halogen projector lamps?
Halogen bulb commonly in those ceiling lights and floor lamps in your living room, are also used in projectors but not as much as metal halides. They burn at a steady rate, giving off the same intensity of brightness with a yellowish tint and last for about 70 hours for each bulb. On the other hand, metal halides last for a few thousand hours and give off a whiter light but which decreases during the lifespan. Essentially, the kind of projector you get determines which type lamp you'll need to buy. Halogen lamps are substantially cheaper than metal halides.
